LUCI - 21 WEST END
Permanent Projection Video Art Installation, Systems Integration
21 West End Ave, New York City
Optical Animal was commissioned as both video artist and overall systems integrator for Luci, the 600 sq-ft lobby sculpture at the 21 West End residential tower in NYC.
The sculpture, which was designed by iCrave and fabricated by UAP, spans the first two stories of the building's lobby, and is comprised of thousands of individual pieces of made-for-projection vellum. The system utilizes 4 installed projectors to illuminate the sculpture on all sides, and is built around a custom-made, user-friendly control software that we created specifically for the project.
The design of the projection content presented a unique oppotunity to form a link between the video artwork and the physical architecture of the space. We took that opportunity to expand on themes found in elements of the interior design, such as elongated hexagonal shapes, circular pools of light, and reflective metal. We developed a series of new work with the intention of carrying those design elements seamlessly from the physical realm into the digital, bringing new life and energy to the surrounding archiceture.
